Getting Started with Time-Based One-Time Passcode (TOTP)

Prev Next

All staff will be required to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to access NCEdCloud. By default, NCEdCloud uses Time-Based One-Time Passcode (TOTP) for MFA. When you log in to NCEdCloud for the first time, you will be guided through a TOTP setup screen if you have not set it up before or if your previous TOTP has been reset.

What is TOTP?

TOTP is an extra security step that helps keep your NCEdCloud account safe. In addition to your username and password, you will enter a temporary code generated by an authentication app.

This code:

  • Is automatically generated by the app
  • Changes every 30 seconds
  • Can only be used once

What do I need to set it up?

To use TOTP, you will need to install an authentication app on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

During setup, NCEdCloud will display a QR code on the screen. You must scan this QR code using your authentication app to link your NCEdCloud account to the app. Once scanned, the app will begin generating the verification codes you will use to log in.

We recommend using one of the following authentication options:

Google Authenticator (mobile app) (free): Setting up NCEdCloud MFA with Google Authenticator

Microsoft Authenticator (mobile app) (free): Setting up NCEdCloud MFA with Microsoft Authenticator

Authenticator Chrome Extension (free): Setting up NCEdCloud MFA with Authenticator Chrome Extension

1Password (password manager with built-in authenticator): Setting up NCEdCloud MFA with 1Password

Once setup is complete, logging in will be quick and easy simply enter the code shown in your authentication app when prompted.

What if I get a new phone or device, or can’t access my old device?

If you get a new phone, tablet, or computer, you may need to set up TOTP again.

Before switching devices, we strongly recommend transferring your authentication app to your new device and ensuring you have access to your current authentication app until setup is complete.

If you no longer have access to your old device or authentication app, contact your district IT staff. They can reset your MFA so you can set up TOTP again on your new device. Once reset, the next time you log in to NCEdCloud, you will be guided through the TOTP setup process again.

What if my device is lost or stolen?

If the device you use for your authentication app is lost or stolen, contact your district IT staff immediately. Once your MFA has been reset, you will be able to log in to NCEdCloud and complete the TOTP setup process again by scanning a new QR code with your authentication app on your replacement device.
